Civil War Chewed Bullets

Here's some of my civil war "Chewed Bullets" some call them Hospital bullets thinking the wounded soldiers chewed on them while having limbs cut off. Some think they chewed them as they sat around in camp during leisure hours. None of that is true! I used the believe in the hospital theory until I tried chewing on a lead civil war bullet. I went as far as to melt camp lead (from Civil war camps) and poured the virgin lead into bullet molds. No way! I was confused so I took the steps to study in great detail my collection of chewed bullets. Friends; domestic and feral hogs did this action. Not Cow's, not Deer just Hogs. Hogs will try to eat ANYTHING; including digging up dead soldiers! One great fear during the war was being eaten by Hogs. It's in their diaries, logs and word of mouth. "Please bury me deep so the Hogs don't eat my corpse." A number of well known books show such action performed by Hogs. Don't believe me? Put a civil war bullet in a plastic zip lock (never put lead in your mouth) and try all you want to crush that bullet flat. You may put dents in it, but look at these. Hogs were attracted to: 1. Lube on the bullet: Mutton tallow & Bee's wax. 2. Saltpeter in the gun powder. 3. Sulfur in the powder. This irresistible mix was more than a Hog could stop itself from chewing, and like chewing gum, once the flavor disappeared, they either spit it out or swallowed it. I used to be a Taxidermist and guided many Hog hunters when I lived in East Tennessee. Comparing their bite force, teeth marks and habits led me to understand and now know what did all that chewing on lead bullets. I'm not alone on this, many in our metal detecting hobby have learned this fact. Each bullet is unique and a very cool collectible. These are $5 each and I pick at random. This lot is from Tennessee.
